Seek help in a domestic violence situation

Oct 5, 2020 | Domestic Violence, Legal Separation, Orders of Protection

Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, isn’t just physical abuse. It is any pattern of behavior used to maintain power and control over the other partner in a relationship and it is not OK.  If you feel trapped in a relationship, please know you are not alone. Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men and does not discriminate based on gender, sexuality, religion, education or economic status. There is help available.

If you are ever in immediate danger, always dial 9-1-1.

In Arizona there are many organizations set up to help victims of domestic violence. You can call the 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. In Maricopa County, you can call 480-890-3039 to find a shelter. You can also call 602-542-4446 for domestic violence program information. The Arizona Department of Economic Security keeps a list of resources available to victims of abuse which you can find here.

If you are not in immediate danger, it’s a good idea to create a safety plan.  Know ahead of time, what is and what is not, acceptable in your relationship and be prepared to seek safe shelter if needed.  Identify people in your life who you can trust.  Be aware of resources that can help you should you need to escape from a domestic violence situation or flee from your abuser.  Remember, don’t ever hesitate to seek help.  There is no shame or embarrassment in being a victim of domestic violence, and there are many people and agencies who are willing to help.  Don’t be afraid to reach out to them.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you or someone you love is in danger, do not hesitate to seek help. Nationally, you can call 1-800-799-7233.
